“You’ll work the desk until you get the needed clearance from your doctor to go back on duty,” Price told him once they were seated.

“I figured as much.”

“I’ve set up an appointment with you to see the department psychiatrist, too.”

“Oh, joy,” Mike muttered. He knew it was the norm, when a police officer had been involved in a shooting. Especially when the officer was the one who’d been shot.

“Now I want the play-by-play of what happened. I have it from everyone else but I need it from your vantage point.”

Mike ran through it, step by step. When he finished, the lieutenant agreed that there was no way anyone could have known the second man, Ogden Reed, was in the room. “Your informant apparently didn’t, if she was telling the truth.”

“Which is debatable at this point,” Mike said.
