Chapter 27

Little does he know that, without Sage’s help, I’d never have found out the connection between Jon and the other men. Jon’s death would be on the books as a mugging. Grant Newton’s murder would probably have been put down to an interrupted burglary, because I wouldn’t have arrived right after it happened. Irwin would be alive, still working for Reed. I owe Sage, big time.

“You’re daydreaming again,” Price said.

“Not really. Merely contemplating the vagaries of fate. Four men dead and we’ll never find out what triggered the whole cycle. Guess? Sure. Know?” Mike shook his head. “Oh, well. Is there anything else you need me for? If not—” he grimaced, “—I’ll go shuffle papers and answer phones.”

“Better yet, write up your final report on the four cases, starting with Watts. Tie them together on paper the way we’ve just done verbally.”

“That, too,” Mike said, saluting Price before leaving the office.
