Chapter 6

When he arrived at the firehouse, Ken was already taking the emergency supplies from the storage area and staging them on the floor. Army surplus had sold the department MREs and four dozen aluminized blankets along with a couple dozen of those special heat resistant blankets for fire rescue. They had thirty lanterns and about forty flashlights for when people got lost on the trails and they had to do a nighttime search.

“Chance stopped by, I sent him to the high school with supplies.” Ken kept working as he spoke.

Derrick scanned the floor and checked on how many batteries they had.

Ken turned on one of the four emergency radios kept at the firehouse. Derrick looked at his watch. It was nine thirty. At the same time the alarm on his phone went off, the news was interrupted to give a flash flood warning to Copper Creek and the surrounding county.

“Looks like we’re up, Chief.”
