Chapter 7

“Stay there and watch me, I’m going to get the flashlights and the food.”

Still shivering, Josie nodded her head.

He dragged his booty up the stairs and grabbed Josie’s hand. Together they walked to the teacher’s lounge, which was the only room in the school that had comfortable chairs that an adult could sit in. He settled Josie and her Bear in a chair and tried to figure out his next move.

When his phone rang it startled him. He looked at its face. Thank God, it was Derrick.

“Where are you? I’m at the high school and can’t find you.”

“I’m still at the elementary school and I’m stuck on the second floor with Josie Barton. When the storm started she hid, it took me forty-five minutes to find her. I grabbed food and juice from the cafeteria and a lantern, trash bags and a flashlight from the utility closet. I guess we’ll have to wait it out here.”

“You can’t.” Panic was evident in Derrick’s voice. “This flood is going to overtake the second floor. Look outside your window.”
