Chapter 9

The mayor had already spoken to the governor and asked him to call out the National Guard. He deployed his men to patrol the town in boats to pick up anyone who was stranded and bring them back to the high school. When the National Guard arrived, they would have helicopters for search and rescue.

It was still raining but not as hard as before—however the weather service warned the surrounding area to expect more heavy rain and further flooding that evening. How he wished he had stayed home an extra hour this morning and loved Steven out of his bad mood. He would have looked at the sky and told Steven not to go in today, and he would have been safe at home. Derrick gave himself a mental shake. He had to stop brooding and make a plan.
