Chapter 10

“Steven,” he called, “We’re here to get you out.”

No answer.

Derrick looked up and saw the broken skylight. “God damn, Ken, help me search the balcony. You start here and I’ll start at the other side by the skylight.”

He heard a moan. Running toward the direction of the sound, Derrick called out to Ken, “Over here.”

Steven visibly disoriented, stood up then sat back down at Derrick’s words. “Sit down here, baby, and let me look at your head.”

Steven had a golf ball size lump on his forehead and shards of glass all over his face. Ken ran over from the other side of the auditorium.

“I think he was unconscious. I can’t tell for how long. He must have a concussion. We have to get him out of here before we’re stranded too.” Derrick took a piece of gauze and tweezers from Ken’s first aid kit and removed the glass from the area around Steven’s eyes and mouth. As he worked he thought it was a good thing Steven had been wearing his glasses instead of the contacts he usually wore.
