Chapter 12

Derrick protested, “What about you?

“Don’t worry about me. You can do me when we get home.” Steven’s eyes opened wide in what looked like panic. “I just thought about something, will our house flood?”

“No, the piece of property we purchased is on the highest rise in the county. If I weren’t the fire chief—I’d have you home in our nice warm bed about now.”

Suddenly the lights went out. Derrick tore out of the bathroom and made his way to the gym by rote from four years in that high school when he was a teenager. Steven followed close behind.

In the gym the firemen took out the flashlights and lanterns. A lantern was given to each of the classrooms and three in the infirmary where Doc Johnson was still stitching up cuts and bandaging scrapes for the stragglers arriving by boat via the fire department.
