Chapter 13

“It won’t be as bad here as elsewhere. A lot of people in Copper Creek were smart and built or bought on a hill. Downtown will be a mess and we’ll have to wait for insurance for the store but the house should be fine.” Derrick kissed Steven on the back of the neck.

“Don’t worry, baby, all our things will be intact and if they’re not we’ll replace them.”

Steven face scrunched up and he took a few calming breaths. “They’re just things, I’m worried about you. Will you have to go out again?” Steven grabbed Derrick and hugged him hard.

“Yeah, we’ll go out again at dawn, to find anyone left behind.”

He rubbed against Derrick from behind.

“I wish you didn’t have to go.” Steven touched Derrick’s blond hair.

“And I wish you didn’t have to look for Josie Barton. You took ten years off of my life.”

Steven huffed into Derrick’s hair. “You’ll take ten years of mine away when you go back out.”

“I have to,” Derrick apologized.
