“Well, the chief sure is taken with you. I’ve never seen him as upset as he was in the boat when we went to pick you up. On the way over, the clouds burst, I didn’t think we were going to make it but he insisted we keep on. Then I saw the white flag and knew we’d found the school. I couldn’t see where I was piloting and I had to take Derrick’s directions on faith. Look, I’ll help you wake the others and make sure they get upstairs. If we get any volunteers for old folks’ duty, I’ll make sure I have a high school kid to take their children, if they have any. You go downstairs and help your man. If my wife was half as good to me and my daughter as you are to Trent, I’d still be married.”

Steven blushed and turned away to control the happy dance that just hit his heart.
