Tuxtax blushed. “What else did Alec tell you about me?”

“Everything. He’s heartbroken that you never came back.”

“He never visited me, and I assumed he didn’t want me.”

She turned and knelt by the hearth. “Tuxtax, do you see this flame?”

“It shouldn’t exist. Fire kills trees.”

“This fire isthe tree. This flame is the tree’s life force. When it goes out, the tree dies. Some elementals rely on tree magic to live. Their life force becomes tied to their tree. Not only will they die if the tree dies, but they must return to their tree each night to rekindle their flame. If they don’t, they die.”

Tuxtax rolled his eyes. “I know all about this. I know how hamadryads work.”

“And Alec. Tuxtax, Alec is hamadryad-blooded.”

Tuxtax scoffed. “Hamadryads are girls. Believe me, Alec is not a girl…”
