Chapter 6

“Nearly got it,” said one of the men.

One of the larger prisoners, tired of waiting around, picked up an especially large rock and slammed it into the container, rupturing the metal and allowing the others to use their sticks as levers to make the hole larger.

“That’s done it!” shouted someone. “Let’s see what we’ve got.”

As the container was emptied, the men realised that their hopes of finding something even approaching delicious were not to be. Bags of rice, flour, dried meat and dried fruit, a few cooking and eating utensils, some basic medical supplies and some firelighters were all it contained. No water, no vegetables, no alcohol.
