Chapter 28

“We need to get to the safe house and get some rest. I need to call the Council of Covens, the other witches. Then we’ll figure out what to do from there,” she said, the sound of the street changing beneath the tires.

Henry looked out to see the flowing dark of a river.

Jamey murmured to Henry, “I’m not sure where we are. I’ve never been here before. I’m scared.”

“Me neither. Me too.”

“I don’t mean just this bridge or this part of the river.”

“I know.”

“What’s happening to us? What’s going to happen?”

Henry didn’t have an answer. He leaned forward and grabbed the back of the front passenger seat headrest. “Dr. Melloy, thank you. You saved our lives,” he said slowly, feeling that whatever he said was inadequate for what she had done, what she had given up. Her house. Her things. He knew she had loved her books, the swords and suits of armor, the maces, the battle shields.

“Thank you,” Jamey murmured, a faint echo.
