“They had many names.

“The Aesir and the Vanir, the gods of Asgard. The twelve Olympians; the Tuatha de Danaan. Pantheons of deities in many times and many cultures.

“Zeus, Odin, Dagda. Lugh, Apollo. Epona, Macha, and Rhiannon. Kana’ti, the Great Hunter, and Selu, the Corn Woman. Enlil, Hecate, Demeter, Kali, Astarte, Inanna.

“They have had many names.

“Gods we called them when they came here, beings with powers that we called divine or supernatural. They came from somewhere else. They came here to hide, to escape trouble where they had been, trouble they had caused

“They grew bored.

“They made the Pets, toys, out of the matter of this world: shapeshifters—like werewolves, selkies, swanfolk, and others—centaurs, pans, merfolk, and monsters—dragons, hydras, basilisks, gorgons. Not all lived, but many did. Many are still here, liiving hidden lives, with protective glamours they wear like second skins.
