“Yeah, and the Internet scares me, and so does that machine. It’s what the minster says all the time: how bad it is. I’d never touched one until VCU.”

“Me neither, except the one in the library a little while ago,” Henry muttered.

Kathleen shook her head. “The minster says a lot of other things are a bad, too, doesn’t he? It’s not true. Watcher-fed hysteria and fear, that’s all it is. Trust me.”

Jamey wondered then what she was thinking. Was she wondering if he and Henry had what it took to be heroes, whatever that was? He wanted to tell her he was wondering the same thing. Using these machines—okay, what other choice did they have? “I know, but, still.”

“But they wouldn’t have one at the public library if it was bad, would they?” Henry asked.

“It’s not true,” Kathleen repeated. “You trust me, yes?”

Both boys nodded very reluctantly.
