Henry stepped up on the altar and stood just beyond the pulpit as Pastor Carl led Jamey down the three steps into the water, until the water up to Jamey’s chest. Pastor Carl raised both hands to pray again as the choir began singing in low voices, “Jesus Friend, So Kind and Gentle.”


The choir stopped singing and Pastor Carl stopped praying when the stained glass above the pool cracked and the lead strips buckled. Jamey’s mother pointed up, her mouth covered, and then she screamed as she pulled both Casey and Mattie against her.
