Chapter 97

Mrs. Currey moved first. Still sobbing, not looking at anyone, she ran out of the room, and down the stairs.

“Mama, wait, please,” Jamey cried, not letting go of Henry, but his mother didn’t look back.

Still holding Jamey’s hand, Henry took a step toward the door and stopped, and listened. Gradually, like the volume of a radio or a TV being slowly turned up, he heard Mrs. Currey downstairs:

“Casey, Mattie, sweethearts? Are you all right? It’s over—the monster’s gone.”

“Mama? Mama, oh, Mama.” Casey started crying.

“Mama’s here, it’s all right, oh, it’s all right…”

“She’s with your little brother and sister,” Henry whispered, and for a long moment, no one said anything else.

Finally Kathleen spoke.
