Chapter 98

She wiped her face. He could see her body stiffen with resolve. “I don’t have three children anymore. I have only two. You are no child of mine. Leave,” she said slowly, as if saying each word caused her extreme pain.

“Oh, Mama.”

“Leave. Take that creature with you.”

“Oh, Mama.”

“Go.” She held up her hand and turned her face to the wall. She was crying.

Henry squeezed his hand. Jamey wiped his face with his other hand, wishing he wasn’t crying. It wasn’t going to be okay. He was going to leave the house where he had lived since he was six when his parents had moved to Fredericksburg and he didn’t know whether he could ever come back and see his parents or his brother and sister again. Where would he go and what would he do in this new magical world, armed with a sword, and a werewolf at his side?

“Good-bye, Mama,” Jamey whispered. Holding Henry’s hand, he walked out of his parents’ bedroom. He left his mother still sitting on the bed, staring at all the pictures on the wall.
