Chapter 14

When she woke, she was alone, lying naked on the leaves. The sun was high, but there was a chill in the air, and in spite of the black fur cloak that covered her, she shivered. Finally free of the moon madness, she counted the numerous aches in her body.

An ancient Romani woman came toward her, removed the fur, and covered her with a woolen cloak. “I had the strangest dream, Grandmother.”

“Hardly a dream, my child.” The old woman helped Shani to her feet and kissed her cheek. “You have done well.” She stroked Shani’s hair away from her face and smiled into her eyes, and Shani felt safe and comforted. “Come with me now. I’ve prepared a soothing bath for you, and then you will have breakfast. After you have rested, we will arrange for you to return to your fathers.”

“My clothes?”

“I’ll have someone fetch your satchel.”

“Thank you.”
