Chapter 25

“Will you ever take Da’ric to the States?”

“I suppose…one day…”

“What are the States, Papa?”

He seemed surprised. “I’ll have to start teaching you geography.”

“But David. He’s so young!” Uncle Lyn said.

“He’s smart as a whip. You’ve seen that for yourself.”

“I suppose I have.” Uncle Lyn ruffled my hair. “I plan to move to New Haven. I’ve been asked to accept a teaching post there.”

“That’s wonderful! Congratulations.”

“I hope you’ll come visit me.”

“I’d have to leave Ric and our son here.”

“You could bring Da’ric with you.”

“I don’t know…”

“Take the opportunity. David, the distance between New Haven and Darien isn’t too great. Why not take advantage of that and introduce Da’ric to Catherine and Woodrow?”

Papa stiffened, the way he did when he thought the crocodiles who sometimes visited our lagoon came too close. “Do you honestly think they’ll accept him?”

“Who, Papa?”

“Your grandparents, fingerling—my mother and father.”
