“What’s wrong with him?”

“You don’t know where this child comes from or who his parents are, David.”

“On the contrary. I’m his father.”

Papa’s papa sent an impatient glance toward him. “Do you think it’s to your credit to take that attitude?”

I’d never seen Papa’s mouth tighten like that before. “This has nothing to do with my credit or my attitude. Da’ric is my son.”

Papa’s papa snorted. “And what sort of name is that? Da’ric?”

“It’s my son’s name. Look, Father. If you object to Da’ric, then I see no reason to continue this visit.”

“David, really.”

Papa didn’t respond. He took my hand, and although I was really too big a boy for that, I could tell from the turmoil in Papa’s thoughts that he needed it. I held on and let him hurry me out of the big house.

“Put on your glasses, please, Da’.”
