Papa and Uncle Lyn put their heads together once again and came up with a solution, and a good friend of Uncle Lyn’s, who happened to be a renowned, board-certified doctor of dermatology, was pleased to do him the favor and signed off on it.

So my medical records showed I suffered from an obscure genetic skin condition that required me to remain covered up, and no one ever questioned it. 8

I’d always been tall, but the summer after I started Thomas Knowlton High School, I’d reached my full adult height. Now I stood six foot seven, not reaching Dad’s height but a good deal taller than Pop. Frequently I got questions regarding the weather up there. I’d learned to either give a slow, bored blink and turn away or cheerfully drone on and on about how wonderfulit was, even if it was pouring rain or spitting sleet.
