“Da’…just like ordinary people don’t have retractable claws, they have skin more like mine than yours. And—”

“They don’t know about beings like Dad or Maggie or me.”

“That’s right, and we can’t let them know. They’d want to learn why you look the way you do, and they’d hurt you in order to discover the reason behind it. If you were older, we could say you had a fascination with reptiles and obtained tattoos, but at your age—they’d label me an unfit parent and take you away from Dad and me.”

“They could try,” I snarled, startling not only Papa and Uncle Lyn but myself as well. I never made sounds like that. “But they’d regret it for as long as they lived, and that wouldn’t be very long.”

“You sound just like your daddy.” Papa wrapped an arm around me.

I blushed as I realized Dad had been listening in, and more than that, he was proud of me.

Don’t encourage him, Papa thought sternly at Dad. He went on to say, “We’ll have to see that doesn’t happen.”
