Chapter 28

“Us being apart this short while will be a trial run to see how you do. If it goes well, if you like it here, we’ll see about enrolling you in school. However, if you’re ill at ease, or if for any reason you don’t like it, you’re to contact me immediately, and I’ll come get you and bring you straight home.”

“All right, Papa.” But I liked Uncle Lyn; he’d always treated me well. I knew if I wanted the sort of education I’d need to become a herpetologist accepted throughout the world, the way Papa was in the community of ichthyologists, I’d have to overcome any discomfort. “It will work out.”

He scooped me into his arms and held on tight. “I’m going to miss you.”

“I’ll miss you, too, but it’s only going to be for a few days, Papa.”

“All right.” He put me down and ruffled my hair. “Take good care of him, Lyn.”

“I will, David. Don’t worry.” He saw the look Papa gave him and rested a hand on his shoulder. “Trynot to worry.”
