“They’re all here, Protector.”

“Good.” But before he could inform The Protector their charges were all accounted for and were fine, the door slammed shut.

And he knew without trying the latch that he was locked in.

“Why did you stop there?” I asked when I realized he hadn’t simply paused to take a breath before continuing.

“You’re kidding.”

“I’m not.” For a long moment he didn’t say anything more. Finally he sighed and admitted, “I can’t figure out what she would do, how far she would go to protect those women. What would you do, Day? If you were in the same situation as The Protector?”

“I’d let the Pirates have ‘em,” I teased, and he reached over and pinched my hip in punishment. “Hey! Watch it, short stuff.”

“Get serious. I’m stuck here, man.”

I reached for another slice of pizza while I gave it some thought, then studied him intently. “I’m not certain how you’ll feel when you hear this.”
