Chapter 40

Graduation proved to be a day of surprises. It had been warm and sunny, so the ceremony was held out on the track field, with family and friends seated in the bleachers. After Den and I had received our diplomas and tossed our caps in the air, he threw his arms around me and tried to swing me around, much to the amusement of classmates who’d learned it was better to smile at his antics than to try to bully him.

I pulled him up off his feet, and we both laughed. “Come on, bud. I’ll introduce you to my father.”

“Where is he? I’ll get my parents and bring them along.”

I pointed out where Pop and Uncle Lyn were helping my grandparents climb down from the bleachers.

“Okay, I’ll meet you there.”

I wove my way through the crowd, nodding and waving to the friends I’d made. It wasn’t hard for me to find my father and uncle, since I was so much taller than even the tallest of the people who’d come to attend the graduation.

“Where did Den go?” Uncle Lyn asked.
