“It doesn’t matter. I’m sure they have other things they’d rather do.”

“I can’t think of a single one, Justin. Why don’t we let the boys get out of their gowns? Lyn and Mrs. Morgan can go on ahead, and you and I can catch up on old times.”

“Old times? There’s nothing to—” The man swallowed heavily at the cool look Pop gave him.

“Da’, why don’t you and Denis turn in your gowns? We’ll meet you at the Green Mountains Tavern.”

“Yes, Pop.” We all did as he…suggested, and when we met at the tavern, Mr. Morgan looked pale.

The hostess led us to our table. Den’s father took a seat as far as he could from Pop and still be at the same table, and he said nothing more about Den and I no longer being friends. 12

Three years flew past. I’d completed my course of studies as an undergrad early, and now would be beginning the intensive work that would bring me an advanced degree in herpetology.
