He cleared his throat. “Yes. Me too. In love with Anthony, I mean. I have been for—for months, I think. I love him, James. I want this.”

“You love him.” James glanced at Nicholas, and back. “I see. But, Robert…have you thought about the life you’ll lead? No offense intended, Anthony, it’s simply…”

“He means,” Nicholas clarified, “that Robert is used to a certain lifestyle, and—forgive me—you work for James, Mr. Price.”

“I did,” Anthony said. “I shouldn’t need to any longer. There’s something else I ought to tell you.”

“Robert,” James interrupted, pained. “I won’t say no to this…I’ve tried that, with you, and I can see…well. I won’t press you into another choice I’ve made on your behalf.” He glanced at Nicholas once more. “But the Irvings are still here, and—”

The library door swung open. Everyone turned.
