“A couple of months, three maybe.” She sniffed. “Elwood didn’t want us to tell anyone, and when I became pregnant…he moved away.” She shrugged. “I was prepared to raise you on my own, with your siblings of course. I told Callum and…well, it was rough for a while, but when I suggested a divorce, he didn’t want us to go our separate ways. He’s always loved you as if you were his.” She gave him a watery smile. “And after a while, we found our way back to each other as a couple.”


“Your dad loves you, he’s never treated you differently from your siblings.”


Thad shook his head and glanced at Sandy, wishing he could hold his hand. “No, Dad never did treat me differently, but you did.”
