Chapter 61

“This is awful.”

“Kidnappings are seldom pleasant.” Thaddeus created a ball of fire in his hand and lit up the hallway. The house was empty and it didn’t take them long to find the stairs leading down into the basement.

There was a gasp in the dark as Thaddeus allowed the light to spread. “Easy.” His voice was soothing, and Sandy had to agree with Jaecar, Thaddeus was the best man for the job.

“We’re from the police, you have nothing to fear.”

Sandy found a light switch and flipped it. The strip light in the ceiling hummed and blinked to life. The sight greeting him would forever be burned into his memory. There were six lockable chain-link cages with two women in each. They each had a bucket in the corner, which he guessed were used as latrines, but there was no food or water that he could see, no means of washing up, and no mattresses or blankets.

Someone was crying.
