“You know about that?” It was Erika’s turn to be surprised.

“I have raised one very quiet child, who, even when he has much to say, says it barely above a whisper. I have raised another who states everything, one word or many, at excited volume. Your room is across a hallway, not across Russia.”

Erika smiled again.

“Your grandfather left money,” Kyoko-san said, getting to the point. “A good sum of money. Left your grandmother well taken care of, with plenty remaining for me and my sisters. Now, my papa, he was traditional. As traditional as yours.”

“Sometimes it seemed as if Otousanwas in his thousands, not his fifties,” Erika commented.

“Hush.”

“I miss him.”

“I know, dear. So do I. Now please, allow me to tell my story.”

Erika acquiesced.

“Your grandfather, you see, he asked your father to marry me—not unlike what your father has asked of Tom Alan.”

Erika looked a bit shocked. “But Papa loved you,” she interrupted yet again.
