“One superstition I know for sure applies here in Japan is the one about it being bad luck to look too happy during your wedding ceremony,” Erika said, picking up her phone. “We got that one safely covered. Billy was in Sochi. I should tell you that.”

“Oh.”

“With Mrs. Mischen and Milo and Jenn to play lackey. He was in heaven.” She smiled. “He even got to see one of the hockey games. We spent some time together. I should tell you that. Okasan sleeps more soundly than Papa.” Erika’s second smile was sadder than the first. “We had one magical night and another that was awful. I thought you should know. Did you and Milo get together?”

“No.”

“Have you spoken?”

“No.” New York was about as far away from Japan as one could get and still be on planet Earth. They didn’t call it the Far East for nothing. If Erika was thinking that, which she probably was, she wasn’t the only one.

“I’ll give you a minute,” Ben offered. “See you out there.”
