It was not all that unusual for teams to skip Worlds in an Olympic year, but Tom Alan and Erika would not have skipped them even had they not been in Japan. To them, even in an Olympic year, the World Championships was the pinnacle of the figure skating season. Skipping it would be like skipping the Super Bowl or the World Series. The fact that Worlds was on their second home’s ice for the first time since being moved in 2011, well, that made the day all the more special.
