Chapter 14

“Hey. Shhh.” He takes my hand and lays it on his chest. “Breathe with me.”

The rise and fall of his chest are steady, like the gently rolling waves on the ocean on a warm summer’s day.

In and out.

Up and down.

The heartbeat underneath my palm is steady. Never falters, going, going, going as to let me know it’s still there. Gradually, I relax, focusing only on the movement of his chest and the faint sound of his breathing until my heart finally stops rabbiting in my chest. Until I’m finally able to open my eyes again.

“I’m sorry.”

“What for?”

“Freaking out. For yelling. I had no idea. I’m like a fucking addict.”

“No, you’re not. You’re a responsible person. You take things seriously and never try to avoid your duties. You have the strongest work ethic of anyone I’ve ever known. And that’s a good thing.”
