When he finally calms down, I ask, “What was that all about?”

“I haven’t told you this, but when I started high school, I thought acting sounded like fun, so I signed up for an after-school drama program. I enjoyed it a lot and the first role I got was as Tom Snout in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. I studied my lines—they weren’t many, maybe ten all in all, but I gave everything I had. Apparently, I wasn’t as great as I thought I was, because after a while, Ms. Meyer, the teacher, took me to the side, and told me those exact words you said just now. ‘You’re many things, but an actor is not one of them.’ That’s when I decided to try cooking instead, was introduced to chocolate, and the rest is history.”

“That wasn’t a nice thing to say to a kid. But now you’re an adult, and I’m sad to say she was right. You haven’t improved with age. Not your acting, at least.”

“Hey!” He pouts, his lower lip sticking out so far, he looks ridiculous, and we both start laughing again.
