Chapter 26

“I’m sorry, my love,” Khnurn said. “It was the only way.”

“When you fed from me. When you had me drink your blood. You were protecting me. You saved my life,” Ian whispered. “I’m grateful for that. I’ve wanted to be like you ever since we talked about what you were. I just needed to know that you cared about me. This time, I’m ready for that commitment.”

Ian turned. He was saved, but perhaps their situation was not yet clear.

The man thing seemed perplexed. Ian imagined that he had never been tricked like this before. He looked fiercely angry, and completely unsure, a combination that Ian knew could often lead to destruction.

Seamus and Mine hurried to them, and pulled Ian and Khnurn back near them, then Seamus and Mine moved in front of them.

“I came for a life, and I don’t plan to leave here without one,” the thing that might have once been a man said, focusing his eyes, this time, on Seamus.
