Chapter 15

Poppy reached up to touch her eyes, and, with alarm, Eirian realised she was crying.

“It’s fine. It doesn’t matter.”

“It kind of does,” Eirian protested.

With a sigh, Poppy stood up, brushing strands of grass from her bare legs.

“No, it doesn’t,” she said firmly, and then, without looking at Eirian, added, “I’m going home.”

Hastily, Eirian struggled to get to their feet, but before they had managed to do so, Poppy was already striding away, making it very clear that they did not want company.

For a while, they just stood there, watching the girl leave, and then, sadly, they let out a sigh. Coming to the island had been a mistake, they thought, not for the first time. 8

Luna Labyrinth looked sternly at the gathered members of staff from her operations department, the light of the large stereovision screen at the far end of the meeting room table illuminating her pale features and fierce expression.

“It should be simple, right? After all, we’ve done it before.”
