For having been deprived of love, Jase was a pure, peaceful soul. Steve wondered if three years in the English lab, working with students whose work ethic wasn’t quite as serious, would have soured Jase on others as it had him.
“I think you should sue,” Steve murmured to Jase.
“Why?”
“So they get the message that it’s not okay to hire a coach who doesn’t protect his players.”
“I don’t get it. I didn’t do anything.”
“Nobody’s saying you did.” Steve’s father broke into their discussion. “The thing is the coaching staff didn’t do anything either.”
Steve could tell by Jase’s face that he favored the path of least resistance.
“You can stop that kind of behavior here, or we can hope the next guy who gets beat up will live through it and blow the whistle,” Steve explained. “You’re not necessarily going to be a hero, and you’ll probably have to take a lot of crap from your friends on the team. But you can make the athletic department here a more responsible place.”
