Mr Tanner had called in men from Scotland Yard, and while he waited for them to arrive, we had tea in Father’s study.

It was most mundane—only a variety of three sandwiches. I picked at the one I’d selected and waited for Father to return.

“I must say, this is very good, Mr Ashford,” Mr Tanner said.

“Thank you. I’m pleased you’re enjoying it.”

“You should have tasted the meal he prepared on New Year’s Eve,” Uncle James said. “Considering the men in our family can’t cook—”

“Even Jamie, Uncle James?”

He smiled for the first time since he’d come to tell me Mama’s body had been found. “Yes. Even my son, which should prove interesting, since I understand his fiancée doesn’t cook either.”

“Jamie is engaged? I had no idea.” I couldn’t help feeling a trifle hurt. My cousin had always been kind to me, even remembering my birthday when others in the family hadn’t.

Uncle James suddenly frowned. “You weren’t aware he’s engaged?”
