Chapter 45

“It will be all right.” Robert sat beside me, his warm presence bolstering my courage, especially when he slid an arm around my shoulders.

“Sir?” Mr Tanner’s gaze was on Uncle James, and he waited for instructions.

My uncle looked around, then said, “Carry on, Remy.”

“I think our best bet would be to start our search with the wine cellar, sir.”

I couldn’t stop shivering, and I thought I was going to vomit.

“I’m here,” Robert whispered, tightening his grip on me. “I’ll stand by you.”

A massive shudder rippled through me. “I hate being in this cellar.” I leaned into him.

“Then we’ll go upstairs.”

“No. If I do…that would be like giving up.”

“All right. Just remember we’re here together.” Robert rested his cheek against my hair, and I found myself burrowing against him and feeling better.

Meanwhile, Uncle James was saying to Mr Tanner, “And why should we check the wine cellar?”

“Oh, just a hunch.”

“A hunch, hmm? Which door?”
