Chapter 20

Troy tilted Beck’s chin up. “What?” Had he said something he shouldn’t? He couldn’t think what.

“I…uh.” Beck swallowed. “You don’t know what it means to hear you say that.” He rubbed his arms.

“You cold?” Troy looked through the window at the brightly shining sun.

“No, I…” Beck swallowed again.

Troy squeezed Beck’s hand but soon felt compelled to go further. Acting purely on instinct, he moved around the breakfast bar, plucked Beck off of the stool, sat down himself, settled Beck in his lap, and pulled the now shaking man into a hug. “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” Beck said, shaking his head. “Was just being stupid.”

“Hey,” Troy said with more heat than he intended. “You’re not stupid.”

Beck let out a sigh. “It’s just…you. You doing this, holding me. Saying what you said about not letting anyone get between us. It’s pathetic I know, but no one has ever said or done those things before.”

Troy rubbed Beck’s back to try to calm the man.
