Troy, too, had lost his appetite but encouraged Beck to have some more. “Remember, you’re eating for two now.”

Beck’s face slowly morphed into a smile.

Troy smiled back in relief. “You forgive me for not telling you sooner?”

Beck shook his head and swallowed. “It isn’t that you delayed telling me, it’s that you did itat all.”

Troy couldn’t apologize for doing what they were trained to do. He and the sotans had done a pretty good job in his opinion. “Next time,” he held up a hand to stop the objection he knew was coming, “I’ll try to act quicker, prevent any shots from being fired.”

Beck sighed. “I guess that’s as much as I can ask.”
