Troy frowned. “Are you sure varnish is safe to use for someone in your condition?”

Beck rolled his eyes. “Let’s not start all that again.”

Troy knew he was overdoing it, but this shit was important. Risking Beck’s wrath, he asked, “Have you checked the label to see if—”

“Troy!”

Troy ducked his head, but he was determined to check the label, just in case. Hell, he’d check everything in Beck’s woodshop. Was there an app or website or something that listed what was toxic to unborn babies? Troy pulled out his cell.

“You got anything exciting planned for today?”

Troy’s attention moved from his phone’s screen to the shooting at the mall. He still hadn’t talked to Beck about it. “Uh, no. Was gonna stay home today and—”

“Hell, no.” Beck set down his toast and glared at Troy. “We agreed last night you wouldn’t smother me.”

Beck had asked Troy not to, Troy had grudgingly agreed to try.

“You sure you’ll be okay? Do you have Doc Hanssen’s number, just in case you—?”
