Well I had wanted some human companionship, hadn’t I? I should have been more careful in what I asked for. But Leo didn’t take himself seriously; he’d been through too much in his life to be that self-centered. He got his own robe for Mrs. M. and helped her change out of her soggy wet one, into his dry one. The boy took his sweatshirt off and would have taken his pants off too, but Leo stopped him. “In the bathroom; get yourself dried off and there’s some sweat pants and stuff in the second dresser drawer. Take what you need. Everything will be okay.”
Except, what the hell was the dog doing? Who the hell’s dog was it? It was just a puppy, and it was quivering under the chair that Mrs. M. was curled up in. Rose had come out of hiding and was walking around sideways, glaring and hissing at the puppy like a snake.
I could use a drink, Leo thought.
