“Tarquin,” Prea said as she came up beside him. Tarquin could hear the gentle rebuke in her voice.

“I know, I know,” he said on a breath. “I’m being too rough on them. Better I yell at them than they die horribly, don’t you think?”

“I think you’ll catch more flies with honey than vinegar,” she said.

“Yes, well, haldur don’t like honey,” Tarquin said brusquely, then smirked grudgingly at her smile.

Next to the wall, the sparring lesson had started again, with Five moving much slower this time, giving his opponent ample opportunities to hit him.

“He fights well,” Prea said.

“He should, considering he’s a shield,” Tarquin said, a little embarrassed because she had caught him looking.

Prea put her hand on his shoulder. “Why don’t you go watch them?”
