Two long leather reins were tied to its fangs.

“Inside! Get them inside now!” Elora shouted at her watch soldiers, and they rushed to shepherd the barely trained volunteers into the relative safety of the castle.

Tarquin scrambled to his hands and knees. One knee hit painfully against Five’s practice sword, and he realized Five must have thrown it to knock him down, saving his life yet again. He yanked his knife from the sheath on his belt.

Up on the wall, the archers released volley after volley of arrows, shooting past like flights of birds. They peppered the wyvern’s neck and fish-white belly. It hissed and bucked, but it wasn’t coming down.
