“Did I freak you out?” He peeked up at him through half-closed eyes.
“No…It’s…When this month started I didn’t know if we were going to make it, as a couple, I mean. And now we’re engaged, we have a cat, and you’re talking babies.”
Jian chuckled, but his eyes closed. “We were always going to make it, love. Always. I just had to take the step and leave work, but I wasn’t brave enough to do it before it was almost too late.” He opened his eyes. “I love you, and I never want to live a day without you in my life.”
Victor nodded, unable to get any words out. “Your gifts are downstairs.”
“Yeah?” Jian smiled a sleepy smile. “You want to get up?”
“What about Zelda?”
Jian reached into the pocket of his pajama pants and pulled out a string with a toffee wrapper tied to it. Victor laughed. “What’s that?”
“She might be scared, but she loves to play. This—” He dangled the toffee wrapper. “—is how I lured her out of the cat carrier.”
