Chapter 59

“How do I know this isn’t a forgery? You’re certainly rich enough to pay someone to create one that would pass inspection, even by experts.”

“I am, but I didn’t. A simple blood test would tell you that Felicia and I are your parents.”

Lyle had the feeling Mr. Radclyffe would insist they do that if he needed more proof than the birth certificate that they werehis parents. He sat, again, elbows on his knees, his chin in his hands as he stared blindly at the floor. Why did they wait until tonight to tell me? What did he mean about keeping me safe? Why put me up for adoption to begin with?

He finally looked up, asking what he felt was the most important question. “If I believe you, which is still up for debate, why wait until tonight to tell me?”

“We have enemies who would do anything in their power to get their hands on you.”

Lyle looked at him in disbelief. “If that’s true, they’ve had more than enough chances since I left home.”
