As if he’d read Lyle’s mind, his father said, “I know you don’t see what advantage there is to being a sorcerer. Think of it as one more skill, much like you’re being able to design and make excellent costumes. But when you feel you need it, it’s there at your fingertips.”

“I guess.” Lyle checked the time and quickly finished his breakfast. “I’d better get moving if I’m going to be at work to let Joseph and Elaine in.”

“They do have the keys, too,” Warner pointed out

“Joseph does, for emergencies, but still.” He gathered up their dishes and took them to the kitchen. When the cook told him she’d have done that, he shrugged. “I was well trained as a kid. You clean up after eating. Well, unless you’re in a restaurant.”

She chuckled. “Yes, I think they’d frown on that.”

He returned to the nook to get his backpack. A bit self-consciously, he kissed Felicia’s cheek and then turned to his father. “When do you want me to come back?”
