Chapter 45

My stomach growled, and I drew a hard breath as I felt both hungry and a little unenergetic. Ugh. I walked past the living room and spied Ebony sitting at the dining table under the bright lamp. She must’ve gotten her new dreads done at the African beauty salon over the holiday. Nice. A huge college textbook and a thick notebook lay in front of her, so I knew not to bother her. She wore her headphones, probably listening to the ocean or something to help her be even less distracted. She was about halfway finished as a science major at the university and had plans to continue as a grad student. I could never have that kind of dedication to school, which was why I commended her for all the hard work that made her super busy all the time, on top of a fulltime office job. She at least made enough money to afford her half of the rent, so that was what mattered the most to me.
