Chapter 48

“I think I can interrupt the necromancer’s connection to the bodies,” Wes says suddenly. “I wanted to tell you that before but…well.” He swallows dryly. “The bodies are not only articulated by a spell but also by his will. That’s what makes them go where he wants.”

There’s a long moment of silence, where Wes can see Ollie debating with himself. Mica’s more important, but Wes can’t…he’s drowning in the guilt. He feels like there’s this heaviness on his chest and it won’t go away. Wes has given up trying to, but he can’t keep going in circles, having the same thoughts and doubts over and over again. Wes hopes that Ollie knows him well enough to know that’s not a suggestion to revise their priorities, but rather a way to not think for a second.

Confirming again Wes’s choice of bonded, Ollie plants a kiss on Wes’s hair and says, “Can you get through?”

“I don’t know.” Shrugging is awkward while sitting but Wes can’t seem to stop himself. “It’s never been done before, but I can try.”
